The Green Thing

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 12:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because "plastic bags weren't good for the environment." The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing back in my earlier days."The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation didn't care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.  But we didn't have the green thing back in our day... so we didn't know what we were doing to the environment.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.  But she was right.  We didn't have the green thing in our day... so we didn't know how much time we were wasting.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind.  We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.

Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day... so, there we were, saving a few dollars but wasting so much valuable time again!

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house ~ not a TV in every room.  And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then...

So, guess what... We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a

plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then... so, there went the environment.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.  We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then? Please forward this on to another selfish older person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart-mouth young person.

Jade Therapy

Using Jade for Healing According to Chinese Medicine

Chinese jade has traditional energy qualities and represents a rare treasure for the human body. Jade qi energy and the body qi energy are closely related and complement each other.Since ancient times it has been used in various healing treatments in Chinese medicine. These are some of the reasons people use jade, and are Chinese beliefs about jade.

Jade helps:

Decrease "heat" in the stomach

Normalize breathing

Improve the water-supply of the lungs and heart

Regulate the voice

Prevent hair from over-drying

Strengthen internal organs and systems (liver, stomach, heart, bonds the entire circulatory system, vision, hearing) and spirit

Regular use of jade therapy:

Helps eliminate dizziness and sleeplessness

Decreases high blood pressure

Softens blood vessels

Smoothes out wrinkles

Strengthens kidneys and male organs

Regulates female functions

Improves quality of blood

Increases memory and other mental abilities

Prevents the rise of chronic illnesses and lengthens the life span.

The jade rollers, gua sha tools, combs and bongers are used for jade therapy. The curative abilities of jade are based on the composition of its microelements and low temperature physical properties, which are especially favorable for the human body and compatible with body qi. A static electromagnetic field originates during the contact of the jade with the human body:

Affects the central nervous system

Purify and normalize the nerve stream

Acting via multiple nerve points on the head.

The vibration of the jade stimulates and helps the circulation in the brain

and removes tiredness.

Lymphatic Massage

Posted on December 1, 2011 at 10:20 AM Comments comments (0)

Lymph massage can benefit just about everyone. If you're feeling tired and low on energy, or if you've been sick and feeling like your body is fighting to get back on track, lymph massage would likely serve you well. In addition, athletes, surgical patients, fibromyaliga and chronic fatigue sufferers, as well as those wanting a fresh look may want to consider lymphatic massage. Here's why. After a sports injury or surgery, lymph vessels can become overwhelmed with the demand placed on them. When tissues are swollen, deep tissue techniques may actually cause damage to the lymph vessels and surrounding structures. Lymphatic massage is often the treatment of choice, because it helps the body remove proteins and waste products from the affected area and reduce the swelling. This helps reduce pressure on cells and allows them to reproduce faster to heal the body.Surgical procedures involving lymph node removal--such as breast cancer surgery--can cause limbs to swell. Severe limb swelling needs the attention of a medical team, but in milder cases, lymphatic massage alone may be enough to prevent or even treat the swelling. It's important that your doctor be involved in your care. Let your doctor know you'd like to see a massage therapist and make sure you have medical approval. Lymph massage can also be part of a care program for fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Because it's so gentle, it is well tolerated by these patients, who are often experiencing sore trigger points throughout the body. And by encouraging lymph flow and removing waste products, this gentle form of bodywork can help restore immune function and improve vitality.Estheticians are trained in a very specific form of lymphatic massage. When you get a facial, your esthetician will gently massage your face to help improve lymph flow. When lymph is moving freely in the face, you'll have clearer, healthier skin without a buildup of toxins and fluids. So, if you're feeling a bit sluggish, experiencing mild to moderate swelling, recovering from a sports injury, or interested in optimizing your lymph system for stronger immunity, ask your massage therapist about lymphatic massage. It can have a powerful impact on your body's ability to heal.

Keeping the Holiday Spirit

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 3:50 AM Comments comments (0)

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip. You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition. Forward this to everyone on your mailing list -- post it to discussion groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

Conscious Cooking

Posted on August 25, 2011 at 6:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Most people can't be bothered to cook meals from scratch each day:  fast food accounts for the largest slice of consumer spending on food.  Yet dishes prepared with love and thoughtful attention from carefully selected fresh ingredients nourish the spirit of those who concoct them as well as the health of those who dine on them.  Cooking is an experience of transformation that we should consider a great honor to take part in.  Magic happens when foods from different life sources are turned by chopping and heat into something capable of sustaining human life.  Bring some of this magic into your kitchen with this meditation.

Leave your preoccupations and worries at the kitchen door.  As you was your hands, imagine the day's concerns being rinsed away with the physical dirt and impurities.  Wipe over work surfaces in the same frame of mind.

Bring together all your ingredients.  Handle them carefully as the offering of other life sources.  State your intention to create the happiness of those your are cooking for.  Declare it out loud.

Let the activities of washing, chopping, and stirring suffuse your body and mind.  Surrender yourself to each task, letting it be an outward sign of your inward state - calm, untroubled by distractions, and full of love.

As your mind gets drawn away by thoughts, constantly anchor yourself to the task at hand and to your intention - to satisfy with good food and love.

As you work, visualize the food you are preparing nourishing the diners with love, and see this love spreading out from the dining table as they take it with them out into their own lives and interactions.

Present the food beautifully - not with carved vegetables and florid napkins, but by honestly and mindfully placing it on the plate.  Now, even before it is eaten, the recipient will absorb feelings of caring and emotional sustenance.

Physical Fitness

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 12:35 PM Comments comments (0)

Fitness (physical fitness) means different things to different people and may include muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition and flexibility.

"Ultimately, I am what I choose to be; my self-esteem follows the same path."

Anonymous

What does it mean to be physically "fit?" Physical fitness is defined as "a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity" (USDHHS, 1996). In other words, it is more than being able to run a long distance or lift a lot of weight at the gym. Being fit is not defined only by what kind of activity you do, how long you do it, or at what level of intensity. While these are important measures of fitness, they only address single areas. Overall fitness is made up of five main components:

•Cardiorespiratory endurance

•Muscular strength

•Muscular endurance

•Body composition

•Flexibility

In order to assess your level of fitness, look at all five components together.

What is "cardiorespiratory endurance (cardiorespiratory fitness)"?

Cardiorespiratory endurance is the ability of the body's circulatory and respiratory systems to supply fuel during sustained physical activity (USDHHS, 1996 as adapted from Corbin & Lindsey, 1994). To improve your cardiorespiratory endurance, try activities that keep your heart rate elevated at a safe level for a sustained length of time such as walking, swimming, or bicycling. The activity you choose does not have to be strenuous to improve your cardiorespiratory endurance. Start slowly with an activity you enjoy, and gradually work up to a more intense pace.

What is "muscular strength"?

Muscular strength is the ability of the muscle to exert force during an activity (USDHHS, 1996 as adapted from Wilmore & Costill, 1994). The key to making your muscles stronger is working them against resistance, whether that be from weights or gravity. If you want to gain muscle strength, try exercises such as lifting weights or rapidly taking the stairs.

What is "muscular endurance"?

Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscle to continue to perform without fatigue (USDHHS, 1996 as adapted from Wilmore & Costill, 1994). To improve your muscle endurance, try cardiorespiratory activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, or dancing.

What is "body composition"?

Body composition refers to the relative amount of muscle, fat, bone, and other vital parts of the body (USDHHS, 1996 as adapted from Corbin and Lindsey, 1994). A person's total body weight (what you see on the bathroom scale) may not change over time. But the bathroom scale does not assess how much of that body weight is fat and how much is lean mass (muscle, bone, tendons, and ligaments). Body composition is important to consider for health and managing your weight!

What is "flexibility"?

Flexibility is the range of motion around a joint (USDHHS, 1996 as adapted from Wilmore & Costill, 1994). Good flexibility in the joints can help prevent injuries through all stages of life. If you want to improve your flexibility, try activities that lengthen the muscles such as swimming or a basic stretching program.

HIDDEN INFLAMMATION

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 12:35 PM Comments comments (0)

We are all familiar with cutting ourselves and how the area around the wound becomes very red for a few days or how red our throats are when we have a sore one. These are normal and appropriate physical reactions.

If your immune system and its ability to quell inflammation in your body are impaired, watch out. You are headed toward illness and premature aging.

Fortunately, addressing the causes of inflammation and learning how to live an anti-inflammatory lifestyle can dramatically improve your health.

The trouble occurs when that defense system runs out of control, like a rebel army bent on destroying its own country.

Many of us are familiar with an overactive immune response and too much inflammation. It results in common conditions like allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disease, and asthma. This is bad inflammation, and if it is left unchecked it can become downright ugly.

What few people understand is that hidden inflammation run amok is at the root of all chronic illness we experience -- conditions like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer, and even autism.

How to Locate the Causes of Hidden Inflammation

So if inflammation and immune imbalances are at the root of most of modern disease, how do we find the causes and get the body back in balance?

First, we need to identify the triggers and causes of inflammation. Then we need to help reset the body's natural immune balance by providing the right conditions for it to thrive

We need to find those inflammatory factors unique to each person and to see how various lifestyle, environmental, or infectious factors spin the immune system out of control, leading to a host of chronic illnesses.

Thankfully, the list of things that cause inflammation is relatively short:

• Poor diet--mostly sugar, refined flours, processed foods, and inflammatory fats such as trans and saturated fats

• Lack of exercise

• Stress

• Hidden or chronic infections with viruses, bacteria, yeasts, or parasites

• Hidden allergens from food or the environment

• Toxins such as mercury and pesticides

• Mold toxins and allergens

7 Steps to Living an Anti-inflammatory Life

So once you have figured out the causes of inflammation in your life, gotten rid of them, the next step is to keep living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. But how do you do that?

It's a disarmingly simple but extraordinarily effective way to achieve UltraWellness:

1. Whole Foods -- Eat a whole foods, high-fiber, plant-based diet, which is inherently anti-inflammatory. That means choosing unprocessed, unrefined, whole, fresh, real foods, not those full of sugar and trans fats and low in powerful anti-inflammatory plant chemicals called phytonutrients.

2. Healthy Fats -- Give yourself an oil change by eating healthy monounsaturated fats in olive oil, nuts and avocadoes, and getting more omega-3 fats from small fish like sardines, herring, sable, and wild salmon.

3. Regular Exercise -- Mounting evidence tells us that regular exercise reduces inflammation. It also improves immune function, strengthens your cardiovascular systems, corrects and prevents insulin resistance, and is key for improving your mood and erasing the effects of stress. In fact, regular exercise is one among a small handful of lifestyle changes that correlates with improved health in virtually ALL of the scientific literature. So get moving already!

4. Relax -- Learn how to engage your vagus nerve by actively relaxing. This powerful nerve relaxes your whole body and lowers inflammation when you practice yoga or meditation, breathe deeply, or even take a hot bath.

5. Avoid Allergens -- If you have food allergies, find out what you're allergic to and get stop eating those foods--gluten and dairy are two common culprits.

6. Heal Your Gut -- Take probiotics to help your digestion and improve the balance of healthy bacteria in your gut, which reduces inflammation.

7. Supplement -- Take a multivitamin/multimineral supplement, fish oil, and vitamin D, all of which help reduce inflammation.

Detoxify Your Personal Environment

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 12:35 PM Comments comments (0)

Here are a dozen ways to detoxify your personal environment, or terrain. A personal environment includes anything that touches you, inside or out, and affects your mind, body, and spirit or emotions. These are ways that you can take control of your personal space, cut down on toxins, and lower your risk for breast cancer.

1.Eat a balanced diet that emphasizes plant-based foods and minimizes animal products as well as refined sugars.

2.Boost your immune system by walking or exercising about 30 minutes a day.

3.Avoid air pollution, such as tobacco smoke and industrial fumes, whenever you can.

4.Walk or sit in the sun for at least 20 minutes a day, for a dose of vitamin D.

5.Clean your indoor environment of toxins, using natural cleaners. It's easy to make natural cleaners yourself.

6.Air out any dry-cleaned clothing or fabrics before using them to minimize contact with PCE (Perchloroethylene) and TCE (Trichloroethylene).

7.Use natural insecticides and organic fertilizers, rather than chemicals in your garden.

8.Drink water -- at least 6 to 8 glasses (48 to 64 ounces) each day. Try making your own Homemade Flavored Water.

9.Cook foods in glass, ceramic, iron, or steel containers instead of plastic made with PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

10.Choose skin care products that contain no estrogens, placental components, phthalates, or parabens.

11.Resolve emotional issues, lower your stress levels, and surround yourself with positive, supportive people to make your body a stronger, less hospitable field in which cancer may grow.

12.Set aside regular time to relax, write in a journal, meditate, or pray –- away from all of your electronic devices. Reconnect with your true self and clear your mind and spirit.

The Lymphatic System

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 12:30 PM Comments comments (0)

The lymphatic system includes the tonsils, adenoids, spleen, and thymus.

Our lymphatic systems keep our cells in the proper fluid balance, absorb fat, and provide immunological defense. Bathing our cells is an interstitial fluid, a clear liquid that flows from the capillaries in our circulatory systems; most of the "used" fluid is drawn back into the bloodstream and recycled, but about 10% of it goes into the lymphatic system. If we weren't provided with a place for this 10%, our bodies would suffer swelling from the excess fluid.

Once the interstitial fluid enters the lymph vessels, it is called lymph. There is no heart to pump fluid through the lymphatic system like there is in the circulatory system, but the contraction of skeletal muscles propels the lymph through the vessels. Lymph nodes, points along the vessels at which the lymph is cleaned, contain lots of white blood cells, or lymphocytes. These special cells can destroy harmful microbes by phagocytosis--they engulf a microbe and then break it down. Another part of this system are the larger "cleaning" centers, the lymph organs--the tonsils, spleen (although it filters blood, not lymph), and thymus among them. After the lymph has been carried through the vessels and filtered, it is emptied back into the bloodstream.

Making "dry brushing" a part of your daily routing will help move the lymph. Start at your feet, brushing up towards your heart, include your entire body with the exception of the tender breast skin.Lymph system Information on Healthline www.healthline.comThe lymph system is a network of organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts, and lymph vessels that produce and transport lymph from tissues to the bloodstream. The lymph system is a major component of the body's immune system.
